News in Brief

Muratov Given News Honor

Novaya Gazeta editor Dmitry Muratov was to receive an award from the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists on Tuesday.

The editor was one of four journalists to receive the committee's 2007 Press Freedom Awards. Muratov and the others "have reported the news despite death threats, harassment, and imprisonment," a CPJ statement said.

Novaya Gazeta employed investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who was murdered last year after achieving fame for her reports on human rights violations in Chechnya. (MT)

Doctor, Nurse Sentenced

A Krasnodar court has sentenced a doctor and a nurse to one-year prison terms for negligence after an infant girl who was given an IV developed a blood clot and had to have her arm amputated.

The Prosecutor General's Office said in a statement that the two-month-old had been brought to a children's hospital in Krasnodar last December with whooping cough.

The Krasnodar District Court on Monday found nurse Yelena Senicheva, who administered the IV, and anesthesiologist Vladimir Pelipenko guilty of negligence leading to the amputation. (AP)
