Unruly Air Passenger Detained

A drunken passenger flying on an Aeroflot jet from Moscow to Munich was briefly detained by German police after shouting anti-Semitic obscenities at fellow travelers and trying to pick a fight, Vremya Novostei reported Tuesday.

During the flight Friday, the business class passenger, Mikhail Shamanov, announced that he was a Cossack and relative of General Vladimir Shamanov, the report said. He then started making derogatory remarks about passengers whom he identified as Jewish and tried to attack one of them.

Shamanov was subdued by the other passengers and flight attendants, who found a passport in his pocket that identified him as Mikhail Shamanov. It was unclear whether he was related to Vladimir Shamanov, who commanded federal troops in Chechnya during the second Chechen campaign before becoming Ulyanovsk governor and later an adviser to the prime minister.

The Aeroflot crew summoned police to arrest Shamanov after landing in Munich. He was released after sobering up.

Shamanov later tried to use his return ticket to fly back to Moscow, but Aeroflot refused to take him on board and he had to fly with a different airline, the newspaper said.
