Turkmens Open Up to Mobile Internet

ASHGABAT -- Telecoms company MTS plans to start offering mobile Internet services in Turkmenistan, one of the world's most isolated states, the company's local office said Monday.

MTS's office in Turkmenistan said the GPRS mobile Internet service would be made available to customers from Nov. 1, adding, however, that it would hold no responsibility for which web sites users chose to use.

"We have received the GPRS license starting November," said an MTS official in Ashgabat.

Under the country's sole Internet provider, Turkmentelekom, private users cannot open a number of opposition and media web sites. Only a few hundred people use the Internet regularly in the desert nation on the Caspian Sea.

MTS currently has about 250,000 mobile phone users in Turkmenistan. Its main domestic rival, Altyn Asyr GSM, plans to expand its customer base to 100,000 by 2008 from the current 43,000.
