Treasure Hunt: Everything and the Kitchen Sink

Looking to do some cooking? Want to bake a bird but can't get hold of a meat thermometer? Just arrived in the country and need to stock the entire kitchen?

Finding the right kitchen utensils can be a challenge, especially if mealtimes involve more than simply tossing a frozen dinner in the microwave.

If the whole home has to be furnished, then the obvious safe bet would be the IKEA stores in the Moscow region, for a one-stop shop.

However, if your cooking needs stretch further than IKEA's utilitarian range, and furniture is not on the shopping list, then the Moscow institution 1,000 Melochei at Gagarin Square is worth checking out. The store's name translates as "1,000 Little Things" and, as that would suggest, it stocks a vast array of inexpensive household items. From popcorn makers to vegetable driers, it has much that is hard to find elsewhere, plus a decent range of cooking utensils, preparation essentials and other knickknacks. There's even a homewares market out front, where you can find plumbing, electrical and building wares.

If 1,000 Melochei doesn't stock what your kitchen needs, then a professional supplier may be required. The Complexbar company and its dealership Bartrest offer a serious selection -- the printed catalog is 340 pages long. The assortment is so wide that it's hard to think of something they might not stock. Besides regular crockery, glassware and the like, other odd paraphernalia include banana-split bowls, all sizes of ice cream scoops, dedicated spoons for preparing absinthe, juggling bottles for practicing cocktail flairing, cream and soda siphon bulbs, and milkshake makers. There's even a metal "cork" for resealing bottles, complete with a code-dial lock.
