Rice to Meet Human Rights Activists

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is to have a breakfast meeting with human rights activists, highlighting Washington's concerns about Russia's rights record, one of the invitees said Wednesday.

Tatyana Lokshina, head of the Demos nongovernmental group campaigning against rights abuses in Chechnya, said she and about 10 other activists had been invited to meet Rice on Saturday.

"One of my key topics is the situation in Chechnya, and I will definitely raise it," Lokshina said. "It is very important that the United States has a very well-thought-out stand toward Russia, together with the European Union. If the EU and United States deliver the same messages, it would be more effective."

The State Department has not published Rice's schedule for the visit to Russia, which starts Friday. She is traveling with Defense Secretary Robert Gates for talks about a planned U.S. missile defense shield in Eastern Europe that Moscow opposes.
