Nutritek Makes Milk in New Zealand

Nutritek Group, the country's largest baby-food company, has begun milk production in New Zealand as it expands overseas, the company said Thursday.

The new plant, in the Canterbury region of the South Island, has an annual milk-processing capacity of 120,000 tons and will produce 18,000 tons of powdered milk and products to sell in Southeast Asia, the company said. Nutritek spent $60 million on building the facility.

The company is expanding overseas to ensure sales growth as demand in Russia may slow in three to four years, vice president Sergei Ogorodnov said in July. Whole milk prices in New Zealand have jumped 51 percent this year, according to Agri-Fax, a local data provider. Nutritek plans to supply products from the plant to the two baby-food factories it is building in China, Ogorodnov said. The company aims to raise its share of the Chinese baby-food market to as much as 3 percent by 2010.
