Direct Rail to Airport in 2008

By the first few months of 2008, an express train will take passengers from Belorussky Station to Sheremetyevo Airport in as little as 35 minutes, the company behind the project said.

The company, Aeroexpress, said it had begun the $7.7 million reconstruction of a specially designed 600-square-meter terminal at Belorussky Station.

"We have tried our hardest to speed up solving all the questions connected with setting up a train terminal at Belorussky Station," Aeroexpress general director Vladimir Petrov said in a statement. "We hope the first passengers will leave the terminal for Sheremetyevo in the first quarter of 2008."

At peak times, trains will leave approximately every half-hour and tickets will cost 150 rubles to 200 rubles ($6 to $8), an Aeroexpress spokeswoman said Friday.

Passengers will be able to register and check in baggage at the Belorussky terminal for internal flights, Aerospace said in the statement.

Trains on the route will travel at speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour.

A third, $95 million airport terminal will also be opened at Sheremetyevo. The 60,000-square-meter terminal will be able to service up to 7 million passengers annually and will also eventually connect with Leningradsky and Savyolovsky stations.

Nonexpress trains currently run between Savyolovsky Station and Lobnya Station, with a bus connection running from Lobnya to Sheremetyevo Airport.
