Yanukovych Ally Dies While Hunting

KIEV -- A prominent Ukrainian lawmaker and ally of Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych died Wednesday from gunshot wounds suffered in a hunting incident in eastern Ukraine, a Health Ministry spokeswoman said.

Evhen Kushnaryov, 55, a former governor of Kharkiv, was shot Tuesday while hunting with a group of friends, spokeswoman Uliana Lozan said.

Ukrainian media reported that Kushnaryov was shot at the end of a day of hunting, after the group spotted a wolf near their cars and got out to shoot at it.

Authorities opened a criminal investigation but said the shooting was an accident. Police have refused to release the name of the person suspected of firing the shot that hit Kushnaryov.

Yanukovych cut short an official visit to Turkey over the death. Yanukovych learned of the death during a news conference with Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan. He took a few minutes to compose himself before he could answer a question.
