Open Contest for Court Chairman

The Supreme Qualification Collegium of Judges has announced that for the first time it will hold an open competition for the position of Supreme Court chairman.

So far, only one person has thrown his hat in the ring -- incumbent chairman Vyacheslav Lebedev. Lebedev, 63, has chaired the Supreme Court for three six-year terms, since 1989.

The next day, the judges' panel is expected to select a candidate whose name will then be submitted to the president.

The Federation Council must approve the candidate two weeks before Lebedev's current term expires in July. Any judge aged 35 to 69 with more than 10 years of experience is eligible.

Lebedev is said to be the favorite.

The collegium consists of 29 members. Eighteen are selected by judges at their convention every four years. Ten are chosen by the Federation Council, and one is named by the president.
