Anna Pendrakovskaya, director of a city-owned chain of movie theaters, remained in critical condition on Monday after being stabbed several times in the entryway of her apartment building.

Pendrakovskaya entered her apartment building on Zemlyanoi Val Ulitsa at 4:15 p.m. on Saturday and was confronted by two masked assailants, police spokeswoman Yelena Perfilova said Monday.

One of the attackers stabbed Pendrakovskaya four times, including blows to the heart and head, before both fled the scene, Perfilova said.

Police are investigating the attack, which they believe was premeditated, Perfilova said. She declined to comment on possible motives for the attack, however.

No suspects had been detained as of Monday evening, Perfilova said.

Pendrakovskaya remained in critical condition on Monday in a Moscow hospital, where she was under police protection.

The two assailants stole nothing from Pendrakovskaya, leading the victim's husband, Valery Pendrakovsky, to speculate that the stabbing was related to his wife's professional activities, Kommersant reported Monday.

Pendrakovskaya's company, Moskovskoye Kino, is attempting to streamline the management of city-owned movie theaters by consolidating them under its control.

In an April 2005 interview with the newspaper Gazeta Zhurnalistskikh Rassledovanii, Pendrakovskaya complained that the directors of some local cinemas has resisted consolidation because they wanted to retain personal control over profits.

Officials at Moskovskoye Kino and the city government's culture committee, which oversees the company, declined to comment Monday.
