Lebedeva and Ukhov Win at the Russian Winter Meet

Olympic champion Tatyana Lebedeva won the women's long jump with a season-best leap of 6.82 meters Sunday at the Russian Winter meet.

Lebedeva, who nearly dropped out of the competition with an injury, beat Viktoriya Rybalko of Ukraine, who was second with a jump of 6.74 meters Lyudmila Kolchanova took third with a jump of 6.69 meters.

Ivan Ukhov won the men's high jump with a season-best 2.39 meters. He beat Yaroslav Rybakov and Andrei Tereshin, who both jumped 2.35 meters.

Kenyan runners swept the podium in the men's two mile.

Shadrack Korir won in eight minutes, 23.94 seconds, 0.16 seconds ahead of Isaac Sang. Boniface Songok came in third, 0.24 seconds behind the winner.

Yevgenia Polyakova won the 60 meter race in 7.18 seconds. Marina Kislova was two-hundredths of a second behind for the second, and Virgen Benavides of Cuba was third.

Seven-time Olympian Merlene Ottey failed to qualify for the final run.

Ottey blamed the starter, who didn't give her enough time to fix her blocks.

"Unfortunately for me, it was a disaster today," Ottey said. "It was the second heat and I didn't have time to set my blocks and for me the race was over even before the starting."

Ottey, 46, who now runs for Slovenia, said her main goal of the season was the European Championships in England.
