Lavrov Weighs In on Kosovo Settlement

Any settlement for Serbia's breakaway Kosovo province must secure the agreement of Belgrade and should not be imposed by outside powers, Russia's foreign minister said Tuesday.

"The resolution of the problem of the status of Kosovo can only be achieved through negotiations and it must be acceptable to the Kosovo leadership and population as well as Belgrade," Sergei Lavrov said.

The minister said major powers had agreed to submit any proposed status for Kosovo to the majority ethnic Albanian region's government and to Serbia for approval. "Depending on the outcome of that, we will set out our own position," he said.

Kosovo's majority ethnic-Albanian population wants independence, but Belgrade has vowed never to agree to that. Serbia's prime minister said Monday that President Vladimir Putin had offered assurances that Moscow would oppose any status for Kosovo that violated Serbia's integrity.
