Deadly Izmailovo Mugger in Custody

Police in eastern Moscow have arrested a mugger who had terrorized the Izmailovsky district in eastern Moscow since the beginning of the year.

Alexander Malayev, 28, was arrested in his apartment last week after a tip led police to a Sberbank branch in the area.

Investigators studied video tapes from the bank's security cameras and identified Malayev, who was waiting in the bank for his latest victim to make a large withdrawal from her account, police spokeswoman Tatyana Petrova said Tuesday.

Malayev typically attacked people on the street in the Izmailovo district with a lethal weapon -- a hammer or length of pipe -- before robbing them.

He struck his last victim, a 49-year-old woman, on the head with a hammer and made off with her purse on Jan. 22 on 3rd Parkovaya Ulitsa. The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she died of her wounds.

Malayev was previously incarcerated twice for possession of drugs and robbery. He has been charged with 13 counts of robbery and an investigation is ongoing, Petrova said.

A 15-year-old girl in Siberia is suspected of paying three other teenagers $570 to kill her mother, with whom she was quarreling, regional prosecutor's spokesman Valery Ziyastinov said Tuesday, The Associated Press reported.

Investigators in Barnaul opened a criminal investigation after the girl's father found his wife dead in their apartment last Wednesday with multiple stab wounds and her throat slit.
