A businessman was killed when a homemade bomb ripped through his luxury sport utility vehicle as he was driving in western Moscow at midday Tuesday, police said.

Police identified the victim as Valery Yakovlev, 39, who previously worked in the federal real estate registry's Moscow region branch, heading the department for the Odintsovo district, Interfax reported.

Prosecutors are investigating the case as an apparent contract hit, a spokesperson for the city's chief prosecutor told Rossia television.

The bomb, which had been placed under Yakovlev's Lexus SUV, was detonated by remote control as he drove through the intersection of Borovskoye Shosse and Proizvodstvennaya Ulitsa at 12:15 p.m., Interfax reported.

The blast also damaged a Nissan that was traveling in front of him, but no one in the car was injured, Rossia reported.

The force of the blast was the equivalent of up to 1 kilogram of TNT, Interfax said.

Police sealed off the area around the destroyed Lexus on Tuesday afternoon, temporarily blocking traffic on an adjacent street, Rossia reported.
