Salsa and Samba for That Sexy Feeling

Participants in Nicolas Zverev's Latin dance classes forge friendships that last for years, he says. They burn off the calories contained in a ham and cheese blin. And they're practically having sex with their clothes on.

"Latin dancing is very sexual, because your body is moving," Zverev said. "Ballroom dancing is philosophical and romantic. With Latin, you feel sexy when you dance. The music is so hot."

Zverev holds English-language lessons in mambo, cha-cha-cha, hustle and other styles seven days a week. He studied dance in Moscow and Blackpool, England, and founded his school here in 1987. Lessons cost around 400 rubles ($15) for 1 1/2 hours, although prices change based on the number of dancers.

"I love to watch couples," Zverev said wistfully, "how they speak not with words, but with movement."

Line-dancing lessons offered by the American Women's Organization at their Oct. 14 Rockin' Russkee Stampede evening will not be as sexually charged.

"It's family dancing. It's not erotic at all," said Nan Tomasko, an organizer. After learning how to grapevine and chasse, dancers will be able to hone their skills with a lasso, try TexMex cuisine, and wives can lock husbands in a mock jail if they drink too much.
