Five Soldiers Ambushed in Chechnya

Five soldiers were ambushed and killed Thursday in Chechnya by gunmen who riddled their military jeep with bullets, police said.

"The gunmen had been waiting in a car without license plates by the roadside, near a bus stop," said a Chechen policeman, who asked not to be named. "When the car with the soldiers approached a nearby crossroads, they opened fire."

Chechen Prosecutor General Valery Kuznetsov said the attack was "a thoroughly prepared ambush," Interfax reported.

Also on Thursday, five police officers were wounded when militants fired at them during a security sweep in Ingushetia, officials said.

Police and security agents were searching a house in the town of Malgobek when unidentified assailants fired grenades at them from a passing car.
