Sheremetyevo Still Selling Alcohol

In the wake of a hand-luggage ban on flights to the United States, the company running duty-free shops at Sheremetyevo Airport said it was continuing to sell alcohol, cosmetics and other items to U.S.-bound passengers.

The passengers were warned when they showed their boarding cards that they would not be allowed to take their purchases on board, said Yulia Petrova, assistant to the general director of Aerofirst, the company that owns Sheremetyevo's Moscow Duty Free.

"We are fully complying with the airport's safety regulations, but we cannot refuse to sell customers alcohol or cosmetics," she said.

Some passengers have been getting around the regulations by drinking their purchases prior to boarding, Petrova said, adding that the ban had not significantly affected duty-free sales as U.S.-bound flights are only a small percentage of the total.
