UES to Invest $15Bln Unified Energy Systems and its subsidiaries will more than double investment next year to $15 billion as demand for electricity rises, Interfax said. State-run UES, the Federal Grid Co. and a holding company for hydropower units will account for about half of the 400 billion ruble ($14.8 billion) investment budget, UES spokeswoman Margarita Nagoga told the news agency. Regional generating and distribution companies will make up the remainder, Interfax said. (Bloomberg) EU May Extend Rope Tariffs The European Union threatened to prolong for five years tariffs on steel ropes and cables from Russia, Turkey and Thailand to shield producers in the EU including Mittal Steel from cheaper imports. The EU said it would review the planned end of the duties imposed in 2001 to counter ""dumping,"" the practice of selling products abroad at below domestic prices or below the cost of production.
