Web Site Offers Peek Inside Kremlin Walls

President Vladimir Putin's personal office and a bird's-eye view of the Kremlin complex are among several images on a Kremlin web site that went up Wednesday.

The web site, called "Open Kremlin: A Virtual Tour Through the Residences of the Russian President" (, offers visitors a peek inside the Kremlin's storied streets and squares, the Senate Palace, the Grand Kremlin Palace and the famous chiming clock on Spasskaya tower.

Putin first proposed the web site three years ago, presidential spokesman Andrei Varlamov said Tuesday during the official unveiling of the web site, Interfax reported.

Each image on the site is accompanied by historical commentary read by movie star Alexei Batalov.

During the Soviet period, Batalov was one of the country's most popular actors, known for having an honest and guileless demeanor. In 1976, he was named People's Artist of the U.S.S.R., one of the highest awards an actor could win. That same year, he was appointed head of the State Film Institute's Actors Studio for four years.

The virtual tours are available only in Russian and are accessible only on computers with a Windows operating system. Most virtual tour images take some time to load, and many of them crash frequently.
