Sukhoi Rebrands Regional Jet Project

Sukhoi Civil Aircraft, a division of Sukhoi Aviation Holding, a maker of jet fighters, has renamed its family of mid-range passenger jets to be better positioned to market its products internationally.

Formerly known as Russian Regional Jet, the family of jetliners seating 75 and 95 passengers, will now be marketed as SuperJet-100, company spokeswoman Olga Kayukova, said by telephone from the Farnborough air show in Britain.

The SuperJet-100 will undergo test flights next year, with first delivery of 30 airplanes scheduled for late 2008 for Aeroflot, Eastern Europe's largest airline. The plane is Russia's hope to regain its status as a global commercial planemaker.

Italy's Finmeccanica agreed last month to buy a stake in the Russian project and promised to invest as much as $250 million in its development.
