Irate Aeroflot Passenger Says He Has Bomb

Police have detained a Ukrainian tourist at Sheremetyevo Airport who in an apparent air rage attack told Aeroflot officials he had a bomb in his luggage.

Authorities have not released the name of the man, who was among a group of eight Ukrainian tourists traveling on an Aeroflot flight from Moscow to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on Wednesday evening. The man told airline officials about the bomb after they refused to allow two companions, who were intoxicated, to board the plane.

The plane initially took off at 4:20 p.m., but returned and made an emergency landing due to a technical failure. Passengers waited three hours in the airport lounge before a backup aircraft was ready, Aeroflot spokeswoman Yelena Semyonova said Thursday.

The Ukrainian tourists drank heavily while they waited, and two were barred from boarding the plane, she said. At that point, the detained man made the bomb threat. All eight members of the group are now blacklisted by Aeroflot.

After a Ukrainian Embassy official intervened, the man was released on condition that he did not leave Moscow, RIA-Novosti reported. If convicted of making a false bomb threat, the man faces up to three years in prison.
