Governor, 5 Aides Are Investigated

Khakasia Governor Alexei Lebed and five of his top aides are being investigated on suspicion of abuse of authority, bribery and other charges, the Prosecutor General's Office said Tuesday.

The investigations are based on the findings of a team from the Prosecutor General's Office and the Audit Chamber that visited Khakasia after the local legislature snubbed a request from Federation Council Speaker Sergei Mironov to dismiss Khakasia's senator, Artur Sarkisyan.

Lebed is suspected of twice vacationing abroad at the expense of two unspecified institutions of higher education. The first deputy head of his administration, Vasily Tsyganok, is suspected of accepting a large bribe, while his top industry official, top tourism official, top health official and top agriculture official are also under investigation.

Lebed said Tuesday that he paid for both trips out of his pocket. He linked his case and the legislature's refusal to dismiss Sarkisyan.
