Policeman Detained in Tajik Beatings

The Moscow City Prosecutor's Office said a policeman had been detained in connection with the beating of Tajik students in a university dormitory.

A spokesman for the office, Sergei Marchenko, said Friday that the 27-year-old officer was suspected of taking part in the Wednesday night incident, in which 10 students from Tajikistan were beaten with belts and a lug wrench at a dormitory of the State Management University in southeastern Moscow. Five were hospitalized with bruises.

Marchenko said investigators were continuing to search for other attackers.

Seven people took part in the attack, including a man in plainclothes who presented himself as a policeman after knocking on the door of one of the students' rooms.

City prosecutor Anatoly Zuyev has taken personal control of the case, which is the latest in a long series of assaults on foreigners in Moscow. Prosecutors do not appear to consider it a hate crime.
