Impounded Vehicles Destroyed in Fire

Fifty-eight cars and 11 motorcycles were destroyed Monday night in a fire at a Moscow region impound lot, fire officials said.

Investigators said arson was the most likely cause of the blaze, given that many vehicles caught fire simultaneously, officials at the Moscow region fire service said, according to Itar-Tass.

It took firefighters 1 1/2 hours to put out the fire. No one was hurt.

At the time of the fire, there were about 120 cars and motorcycles at the lot. All had been impounded from their owners for various traffic violations.

The impound lot was at Dmitrovskoye Shosse, north of Moscow. It was 50 meters from a traffic police checkpoint.

While the traffic police are responsible for impounding cars, they are not responsible for those cars once they have been deposited at impound lots, firefighters said, Itar-Tass reported.

It was not immediately clear who the owners of the destroyed vehicles were.
