Demonstration for Safer Roads

Protesters who want to see fewer bureaucrats with blue flashing lights on their cars are expected to demonstrate Saturday on Volokolamskoe Shosse across the Tyshinskiy Aerodrome.

Vyacheslav Lysakov, head of the national car campaign Svoboda Vybora, said at a news conference Thursday that the demonstration's message would be: "No flashers. No anti-driver changes to the administrative code."

Lysakov also said protestors did not want all the flashing lights eliminated — just those used by government officials who, in his view, did not need them.

Vladimir Ryzhkov, head of the Republican Party, said that officially 3,000 cars had the special blue lights. But he added that many drivers obtained them illegally.

Alexander Kotov, president of the multiregional professional drivers organization, said: "The climate on our roads is negative. What happens on our roads is we have people who do whatever they want."
