News in Brief

34,000 Died in Car Crashes

Nearly 34,000 people died in road accidents in Russia last year, including over 1,300 children, decreasing for the third time in the past three years, the head of the Interior Ministry's traffic police department said Wednesday.

Most of the incidents in which children were hurt resulted from traffic violations, including drunken driving, Lieutenant General Viktor Kiryanov said. He was quoted by news agencies last year as saying in 2004 there were 34,500 deaths. (AP)

Preparedness for Pandemic

Russia's chief epidemiologist called Wednesday for increased efforts to stem the spread of infectious diseases. Gennady Onishchenko urged the international community to pool resources to combat diseases like HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and bird flu, which he said was expected to develop into a pandemic.

"I would like to hope that the question of infectious diseases would not only remain on the G8 agenda, but would dominate it," Onishchenko told an international conference of officials in preparation for the Group of Eight summit, which Russia will host in July. (AP)

Police Fire on Protesters

MAKHACHKALA -- Police opened fire Tuesday on a crowd of protesters demanding the resignation of a district administration chief in Dagestan, killing a civilian, officials said. About 1,000 people had gathered in Usukhchai and tried to break into the Dozuparinsky administration headquarters, a police spokesman said.

When police intervened, a shot rang out, and police opened fire on the protesters, some of whom were armed, the spokesman said. One local resident was killed, he said. (AP)
