Medvedkov: Trade Talks to Continue

Russia's chief trade talks negotiator on Tuesday denied reports that Moscow might break off its talks on joining the World Trade Organization in protest at delays in the process caused by Washington.

Maxim Medvedkov said the United States, which must sign a bilateral agreement for Russia to join the WTO, had promised a deal by the time Russia hosts a summit of the Group of Eight industrialized nations on July 15.

Russian media this week quoted government sources as saying Moscow might suspend or abandon its WTO membership bid because of mounting frustration that Washington was holding up the talks.

"We look with optimism at this process, and I personally think the process [will be finished] in weeks, or in about two months. It will certainly not be years," Medvedkov said at a news briefing. "There is a certain delay in completing these talks ... but that does not mean that we will break them off. They will carry on for as long as necessary."
