Dagestani Shootout Kills 2 Policemen, 3 Militants

MAKHACHKALA -- Police exchanged gunfire with suspected militants in Dagestan, killing a presumed rebel leader and two followers in a shootout that also left a senior local police officer and a member of an elite police unit dead, officials said Monday.

A group of up to six gunmen hiding in a wooded area ambushed police searching an area Sunday near the village of Nizhny Dzhengutai in the Buinaksk district southwest of Dagestan's capital, Makhachkala, regional Interior Ministry spokeswoman Anzhela Martirosova said.

Martirosova said one of the dead was believed to be a leader of Islamic militants in the district, one of the police killed was the head of a local criminal investigation department, and the other was a sergeant in a special unit of the federal Interior Ministry forces.

Police were searching for surviving militants who fled following the fighting, she said.

In Ingushetia, meanwhile, a suspected militant who was detained earlier led authorities Sunday to a militant camp where they found the body of a police major who went missing several days ago, said a spokesman for the Interior Ministry's southern branch, Roman Shchekotin.

Ingushetia has suffered many attacks on law enforcement officers and facilities.
