Norwegian Salmon Ban May Be Lifted

Moscow may allow some Norwegian firms to restart exports of fresh salmon to Russia in April if veterinary inspectors rule that the products are safe, Russia's top animal and plant official said Thursday.

"We will analyze the conclusions ... and may start lifting restrictions April 1," Sergei Dankvert said.

"This does not mean that the ban from all firms will definitely be lifted. Concrete decisions will be taken on concrete firms," he said.

Russia introduced the ban on fresh Norwegian salmon imports on Jan. 1, saying the fish contained unacceptably high levels of toxic metals.

Dankvert said Norway had agreed to allow Russian inspectors to check the Norwegian system of food safety monitoring, fish farms, fishing fleet and fish processing facilities in the middle of March. He said Russia was also examining ways to prevent illegal fishing.
