Avalanche Kills 2 Near Lake Baikal

An avalanche hit a group of snowboarders in the mountains near Lake Baikal on Wednesday, killing two and injuring at least four, an emergency official said.

Both of those killed were French, said a duty officer with the federal Emergency Situations Ministry.

The officer said the two were among a group of 18 snowboarders who were accompanied by two Russian guides in mountains about 100 kilometers south of the region's main city, Irkutsk.

The condition of the remainder of the group -- which included a total of 10 French, six Swiss and two German tourists -- was unclear, said the officer, who did not give his name because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Lake Baikal is surrounded by sizable mountain peaks, and the region is a popular tourist destination.
