Hamas Talks Set for Friday



A delegation from the Palestinian militant group Hamas will visit Moscow for talks on Friday, Alexander Kalugin, the Foreign Ministry's special envoy to the Middle East, said Monday.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov may lead the Russian side, he said.

Hamas leader Khalaad Mashaal will head the delegation, Hamas said. (AP)




Gorbachev Warns U.S.



Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev on Monday warned the United States against unilateralism in global affairs and said Iran's nuclear crisis should be solved through patient diplomacy.

Gorbachev, who turns 75 on Thursday, also hailed the Kremlin's invitation for Hamas to visit Moscow and criticized the West for trying to shun the militant Palestinian group. (AP)




Vedomosti Editor Killed



Vedomosti economics editor Natalya Neimysheva died in a car crash Friday evening along with Gennady Yezhov, a spokesman for the finance minister.

Yezhov's Nissan sedan was traveling at a speed of 140 kilometers per hour when it grazed the Krymsky Bridge and caught fire. Neimysheva, 28, had worked at Vedomosti since its founding in 2003. She is survived by her husband, Igor, and young daughter, Nastya. (MT)




Leopard Bites Off Finger



A snow leopard bit off a 19-year-old student's finger when she tried to pet it at the Moscow Zoo, Moskovsky Komsomolets reported Sunday.

"The animal looked so peaceful. I decided to pet it," the student, identified as Yelena, was quoted as saying.

The leopard grabbed hold of Yelena's hand with its paws and mouth. She managed to pull away, but the leopard swallowed her right middle finger.

Body Found in New Car



A Moscow driver found a partially decomposed body in the back seat of his newly purchased second-hand SUV, Moskovsky Komsomolets reported.

Police were trying to identify the body, a man of about 40 years old from the Caucasus, the newspaper said Sunday. Police said he might have slipped into the Mitsubishi Pajero SUV as it was being shipped by train from Vladivostok to Moscow. (MT)
