BBC Off the Air For the 2nd Time

A BBC radio broadcast is off the Russian airwaves for the second time in one year.

The BBC's Russian Service has been off the FM airwaves since Nov. 24 due to "technical problems" with broadcast partner Radio Arsenal, the BBC said Friday. "We have no further information on the nature of these technical difficulties and are therefore unable to speculate on their causes," BBC World Service spokeswoman Jill Matthews said by e-mail.

The BBC Russian Service usually broadcasts a "Morning on the BBC" program on the 87.5 FM bandwidth from 7 to 8:30 a.m. At all other times, Radio Arsenal has the frequency.

Calls to Radio Arsenal went unanswered, and the IT and Communications Ministry did not respond immediately to requests for comment.

The BBC's Russian Service also went off the air in December 2005. The company blamed the expiration of a broadcast license.
