Kazakh Pipeline Work to Begin '08

BEIJING -- KazMunaiGaz, Kazakhstan's state-owned gas producer, and China National Petroleum, plan to start construction of a gas pipeline linking the two countries in 2008, a senior Kazakh official said Thursday.

Deliveries of 10 billion cubic meters of gas will start in 2009 after the first phase of construction is completed, Issayev said.

The second stage of construction will be completed in 2012 and gas deliveries will rise to 30 bcm per year, said Mussabek Issayev of the Kazakh Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

"We are actively seeking the participation of Chinese companies in Kazakhstan,'' Issayev said at the China Gas Summit 2006. "Kazakhstan is looking to increase gas supplies not only to China but also Russia.''
