Ask the Frequent Flyer

For MT
Christopher Weafer, chief strategist at Alfa Bank:

Favorite destination?
Bangkok, Thailand. I lived there for several years and got to know the city beyond the tourist facade. Living is easy, the food is great, especially the street food, and you can always get a place to eat -- more often a brick beside a plastic table on the pavement -- at any hour. The weather is very even throughout the year and the people are genuinely nice once you get past the tourist smile.

Favorite hotel worldwide?
Ciragan Palace, operated by Kempinski, in Istanbul, Turkey. The location is spectacular, right on the edge of the Bosporus and with views of the Blue Mosque and the Asia-Europe bridge -- and you can watch the oil tankers sail by from the riverside bar. It has a great choice of restaurants and service that is in the top world league.

Favorite restaurant worldwide?
Fish Market in the Intercontinental Hotel in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Located right on the beach, it carries a huge range of fresh fish cooked in an open wok kitchen to any style specified. The specialty is spicy Asian style.

Best airport?
Changi Airport in Singapore -- so easy to get quickly through, with lots of services and shops if you have time to kill.

Which airline has the best food?
Qatar Airways. There is actually only a marginal difference between the top-tier airlines but I recall their food service to have been particularly good.

What did you do/read on your last flight?
Worry. I am a poor flyer, constantly listening for unusual noises, etc. I read "God's Terrorists," a history of militant Islam since the 13th century, and "Murder in Samarkand."

What do you always take with you when you travel?
A pen and a writing pad to doodle with ideas for notes and research ideas, iPod, Bose noise-reduction headphones to also keep out those unusual noises that I mentioned earlier, a book and lots of research material that I need to catch up with.
