Khodorkovsky Put in Punishment Cell

Mikhail Khodorkovsky was put in a punishment cell on Tuesday for breaking the rules at the Chita prison where he is serving an eight-year sentence on fraud and tax evasion charges.

Khodorkovsky will spend five days in solitary confinement after guards found documents that prison authorities said were banned, a statement on his web site said.

His press service, which said the documents had been delivered by mail to the prison and checked by guards, accused prison authorities of discriminating against Khodorkovsky. "The absurdity of the actions of the prison administration officials and their discrimination in relation to Khodorkovsky is completely obvious," the statement on said.

Prison officials could not be reached for comment.

The punishment followed an earlier rebuke for leaving his place during prison work. He had left his place to tell someone his tools were broken, his press service said.
