Isinbayeva Voted 2005 Top European Athlete

APPole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva
Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva on Monday was named European Athlete of the Year for her record-breaking 2005.

Isinbayeva became the first woman ever to clear 5 meters at Crystal Palace, in London, in July. She went on to better the mark to 5.01 meters -- her ninth world record of the year -- to win August's World Athletics Championships title in Helsinki. Isinbayeva can add the accolade to the World Athlete of the Year award she received from the IAAF. The title of top European male athlete went to Lithuanian discus thrower Vigilijus Alekna, who was beaten only once in the entire year.

Russia's middle-distance runner Yury Borzakovky placed fifth for the men in the Internet poll, while triple jumper Tatyana Lebedeva -- winner of the Golden League jackpot of $1 million -- and Uzbek-born Russian long jumper Tatyana Kotova were voted the third- and seventh-best female athletes of 2005, respectively. The European Athletics Association surveyed member federations, the media and the public.
