6 Will Bid for TV Broadcast Rights

A federal television tender will pit military channel Zvezda against a children's network and four others Wednesday, with the prize being broadcast rights for a large swath of the country.

A panel of nine officials from the Federal Contest Commission for Television and Radio Broadcasting will chose the winner from Ren-TV, STS-Media, Zvezda, The National Television Syndicate, NIK: Children's Television, and Petersburg. The panel includes five government representatives and four nongovernmental representatives.

Commission members rejected speculation that that the decision had been predetermined by federal authorities, Kommersant reported Tuesday.

Kommersant did not specify how much of the country would be covered by the frequency.

TV Center won a similar tender in 2000, and TVS won one in 2002. The 2002 tender was held by presidential order after authorities closed TV6 that year, Kommersant reported. TVS was then shut down in 2003.
