Dutchman Found Dead

A Dutch citizen was found dead in a room in the Rossiya Hotel in central Moscow on Sunday, Interfax reported, citing police sources.

The man, who arrived on a tourist visa, died as a result of a head injury, police said. The man's identity was not released.

Police were investigating whether the man was killed or died of an accident. No valuables appeared to be missing from the room. (MT)

2 Killed in Dagestan

Dagestani police on Sunday killed a gunman who had shot at a police checkpoint, while another assailant killed himself, news reports said.

The incident occurred early Sunday some 30 kilometers south of the regional capital, Makhachkala.

Two unidentified attackers fired weapons at the police checkpoint from a passing vehicle. The police returned fire, killing one gunman. The second assailant killed himself by detonating a hand grenade to avoid capture. (AP)

Iraq Calls Russia Unfriendly

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani on Sunday urged Russia to forge better ties with the Iraqi authorities, saying that the Kremlin's "unfriendly" stance hurts Russian companies' chance of returning to the nation's lucrative oil market.

"Russia's current policy is not a realistic policy. I would say this position conveys a rather unfriendly look," Talabani told Interfax. (AP)

Orange Protest in Baku

BAKU, Azerbaijan -- More than 2,000 orange-clad opposition activists rallied in the Azeri capital Saturday, in the first such demonstration since official campaigning began for the nation's parliamentary elections.

Yelling "Resign!" and carrying orange flags and banners in Russian and English, the activists railed against President Ilham Aliyev and demanded that authorities ensure that the Nov. 6 vote is free and fair.

Opposition parties have rallied almost weekly amid fears that Aliyev's government could try to rig the vote. (AP)

Kazakh Challenger Named

An alliance of opposition groups on Saturday nominated Zharmakhan Tuyakbai, a former parliament speaker, to run against Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev in the Dec. 4 presidential election.

Kazakhstan's ruling Otan party on Friday officially named Nazarbayev as its candidate in the election. (AP)

3 Dead in Mine Blast

A methane blast at a coal mine in the Kemerovo region killed three people and injured seven, Interfax reported Friday.

The blast ripped through the mine in Anzhero-Sudzhensk late Thursday, Interfax said. (Reuters)
