Extradition Requests Not Forgotten

Russia said Thursday that it would continue to seek the extradition of two Chechen rebel envoys given asylum in Britain and the United States.

Anatoly Safonov, the presidential envoy on international terrorism, said Russia would use both political and procedural efforts to secure the extradition of Akhmed Zakayev, the London-based representative of late Chechen rebel leader Aslan Maskhadov.

He said Moscow will also repeat demands that the United States extradite Ilyas Akhmadov, a former foreign minister in the rebel government.

Akhmadov was fired from the Chechen rebel government in a reported shakeup last month by Abdul-Khalim Sadulayev, who took over as the rebels' leader following the killing of Maskhadov this spring. Zakayev was reportedly demoted.

Safonov also reiterated Russian claims that much of the Chechen rebels' financing comes from abroad.
