Putin on Iraq Withdrawal

President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that it was vital to draw up a timetable for withdrawal of foreign troops from Iraq in order to encourage insurgents to take part in creating their state.

Putin also repeated Moscow's call for an international conference on Iraq to help bring peace to the country.

"We believe it is necessary to work out a timetable for the gradual withdrawal of foreign troops from Iraq," Putin said after meeting Jordan's King Abdullah II in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, Itar-Tass reported. (Reuters)

Abbas Calls Putin

President Vladimir Putin on Thursday spoke by telephone with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, who informed him of the situation in the Gaza Strip, where Israeli troops were forcibly evacuating settlers for a second day, the Kremlin said.

In the conversation, which took place at the initiative of Abbas, Putin praised the Palestinian president for urging his people to refrain from attacks during the pullout, the Kremlin said. The two men also discussed practical issues concerning international aid for the Palestinian Authority as it takes control of Gaza, including from Russia. (AP)

Batdyev Flouts Summons

NALCHIK -- Karachayevo-Cherkessia President Mustafa Batdyev, whose former son-in-law is among 16 people on trial over last year's slaying of seven people, flouted a court summons Thursday to appear as a witness, the presiding judge said. (AP)
