Journalist Is Released

Russian journalist Nikolai Goshko, who was sentenced to five years in prison for criminal defamation, has been released after serving less than three months, the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said.

A court in Smolensk convicted Goshko after he defamed three local officials in a 2000 radio broadcast, saying they had masterminded the murder of an editor of a radio station. Prosecutors switched to a lesser charge of criminal insult, CPJ said Wednesday.
