Vilnius Lashes Back at Yukos Request

Russia's request to freeze Yukos' stake in Lithuania's Mazeikiu Nafta refinery amounts to meddling in a foreign country's affairs, the Baltic state's president, Valdus Adamkus, said Thursday.

"I do not know the details and learned about it from the media, but I think this is an ... act meant to interfere in the contracts of another country," Adamkus said during a parliamentary briefing, Baltic News Service reported.

On Wednesday, in an attempt to collect billions of dollars in back taxes, the Russian Justice Ministry requested that Lithuania and the Netherlands freeze any deals involving Yukos-controlled shares in Mazeikiu.

Laurynas Bucalis, head of the Lithuanian government's press office, said Thursday that the government had not been contacted about freezing Yukos-related deals.

Yukos controls 53.7 percent in the Baltic states' only refinery. Several Russian and international oil giants have expressed interest in buying the stake.
