2 Convicted in the Killing of 2 Uzbeks

The Moscow regional court sentenced two men to up to 17 years in prison Monday for the murder of two Uzbeks, a court spokeswoman said.

Prosecutors had asked for Denis Yermoshin and Anton Kuznetsov to be convicted for hate crimes, but the court found them guilty only of murder, spokeswoman Yekaterina Gurskaya said.

Kuznetsov was sentenced to 17 years and Yermoshin 14.

The two had pleaded not guilty to setting fire last summer to a house where a group of Uzbeks were staying in the Moscow region.

The two had allegedly demanded $100 from the Uzbeks, and when they refused, they lit the blaze. Two of the occupants of the house died.

Attacks on foreigners, particularly dark-skinned migrants from southern Russia and Central Asia, are on the rise in Russia.
