Rally Protests Refugees' Eviction

MAKHACHKALA -- Around 1,000 people rallied in Dagestan on Tuesday in support of residents of a Chechen village who fled into Dagestan to protest what they described as a brutal security raid, police said.

Local police chief Valentin Ivanov said by telephone that the protesters, who included regional lawmakers and local officials, had criticized plans by the Dagestani authorities to send the refugees home. Most of the residents of the eastern Chechen village of Borozdinovskaya are of Dagestani descent, and they say Russian and Chechen security forces abducted 11 people and killed a 77-year-old man during a violent June 4 raid.

The Borozdinovskaya village residents crossed late last week with their belongings loaded onto dump trucks and other vehicles, and set up a makeshift tent camp in a field several hundred meters from the border.
