Budyonnovsk Remembers

Residents of the southern town of Budyonnovsk laid wreaths and flowers and held church services Tuesday, commemorating the 10th anniversary of a hostage seizure at a hospital that left more than 100 civilians dead.

Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev's 1995 raid on the hospital, about 145 kilometers north of the Chechen border, saw 200 heavily armed fighters holding doctors and patients hostage for nearly three days before federal forces unsuccessfully stormed the building.

Basayev and his men then escaped back into Chechnya, using some of their hostages as human shields.

The attack -- in which nearly 150 civilians, military personnel and police died -- was one of the major events in the first of the two wars Russia has fought against separatists in Chechnya.
