Storms Hold Up LUKoil Exports

LONDON -- LUKoil, Russia's largest oil producer, said 1,721 rail cars carrying its fuel to a Baltic Sea port for export are behind schedule because of loading disruptions caused by storms.

LUKoil has been facing delays at the Kaliningrad port since storms in January, Alexander Pershin, a spokesman for Russian Railways, or RZD, said Friday.

"This is a 10-kilometer-long jam of rail cars," he said by telephone from Kaliningrad. "We can see that this traffic jam will not disappear in April."

RZD is concerned that an environmental incident may occur in the next month if the fuel-loaded cars catch fire when farmers start burning grass in fields before sowing season.
