Main Streets Blocked Off for Victory Day Rehearsals

Traffic police blocked several streets in central Moscow during rush hour Tuesday evening for the first of five days of rehearsals for a Victory Day parade.

The rehearsal Tuesday was for drivers of 130 trucks that will carry 2,500 World War II veterans across Red Square during the parade on May 9. From 6:30 p.m., parade organizers walked the drivers along the route they will take to and from Red Square, a military spokesman said. Large parts of central Moscow also will be closed from 6:30 p.m. Thursday, when the drivers will steer trucks designed by the ZiL plant to look like World War II vehicles along the route, he said.

Additional rehearsals will take place on April 25, 27 and 29, traffic police spokesman Vyacheslav Trubin said. During the rehearsals, 7,000 soldiers are to practice marching on Red Square.

The military spokesman denied media reports that tanks and armored vehicles would take part in the parade.

A subbotnik -- a day of voluntary labor -- is scheduled for Saturday to clean up venues hosting May 9 festivities as well as monuments and military cemeteries.

Streets being closed for rehearsals include: Tverskaya from Pushkin Square to Okhotny Ryad as well as Vasilyevsky Spusk, Ilinka, Varvarka, Yauzskaya, Solyanka, Mokhovaya, Okhotny Ryad, Moskvoretskaya, Vozdvizhenka; the Bolshoi Moskvoretsky and Bolshoi Kamenny bridges; Nikitsky and Tverskoi boulevards; Moskvoretskaya, Kremlyovskaya, Prechistenskaya, Bolotnaya, Podgorskaya, Bernikovskaya, Kotelnicheskaya and Ustinskaya embankments; Kitaigorodsky Proyezd and Ustinsky Proyezd; Solyansky Tupik; and Slavyanskaya Ploshchad.
