Klimov Murder Probe Wrapped Up

The Prosecutor General's Office completed its investigation into the June 6, 2003, killing of Igor Klimov, acting general director of the powerful Almaz-Antei air defense concern, it said in a statement.

The murder was widely viewed at the time as an attempt to hinder the integration of Almaz-Antei, which comprises 46 defense firms and makes the bestselling S-300 air defense system.

The prosecutors identified an organized crime group of six people that carried out contract killings, including Klimov's, the statement said Wednesday.

All six members of the group, including Vladimir Stepanov, a senior detective at St. Petersburg's main internal affairs directorate, have been charged, the statement said.

Kommersant reported Thursday that hit man Alexander Burukin turned on his accomplices after they failed to pay him $1,200 out of $1,500 promised for the hit on Klimov.
