No Promise of Immunity for Kuchma

KIEV -- Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko said he has given no immunity guarantees to former President Leonid Kuchma regarding the 2000 slaying of journalist Heorhiy Gongadze, his office said Wednesday.

Kuchma's opponents have accused him of giving the order that led to the abduction and brutal killing of Gongadze nearly five years ago. Kuchma has denied the allegations.

"Each citizen of Ukraine is equal before the law," Yushchenko said, according to a statement distributed by his office. "Everyone who violated the law must be responsible for the law."

In an interview published Wednesday in Russia's Vremya Novostei newspaper, Kuchma also said that he had received no guarantee from Yushchenko -- and that he did not need any.

The Prosecutor General's Office said Wednesday that it has questioned Volodymyr Lytvyn, Kuchma's former chief of staff, and the former head of the Federal Security Service this week about the Gongadze case.
