Iraq's Shiite Alliance Forms Majority

Iraq's electoral commission certified the results of the country's Jan. 30 elections Thursday and allocated 140 seats to the clergy-backed United Iraqi Alliance, giving them a majority in the new parliament.

U.S. President George W. Bush called on Syria on Thursday to withdraw its forces from Lebanon as Lebanese opposition leaders vowed to topple the country's pro-Syrian leadership.

A Problem With Authority

The word ????????? is a relatively new addition to the Russian language. My facsimile edition of the 1882 Dal dictionary doesn't include it, but a more recent Russian dictionary defines it as something that is ""universally accepted or influential,"" or ""a person who is considered an expert"" -- which is very similar to the most common definitions of ""authority"" in English.
